Nearly two-thirds of the artichokes grown in the U.S. come from the fog-shrouded fields surrounding Castroville, Calif., the self-proclaimed "Artichoke Center of the World. The moderate climate of the central coast of California, characterized by cool summers and mild winters, is an ideal growing area. Artichokes are only one of the many crops grown in the fertile soil of the Salinas Valley. While most people think that Monterey County is primarily a tourist area, the major industry in the area is agriculture.

Hotel & Travel

A visit to the beautiful Monterey Peninsula just isn't complete without a trip to Old Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1870 and expanded through out the early 1900s, the wharf served as a base for the Monterey Sardine fleet during the heyday of the sardine fishery. Where once tons of sardines were shipped daily, now thousands of visitors enjoy the Wharf's many fine restaurants, gift shops, art galleries, tackle and bait shops, fishing, whale watching harbor cruise and party boat concessions
